One of the oldest folk legends tells that Sri Muthal Ravuthar was born in the ancient kingdom of Gingee.

According to this story, one night Draupadi appeared to him in a dream and promised to grant him any wish if he proved the depth of his devotion by offering the greatest possible sacrifice.

Prepared to fulfil her command, he brought his pregnant sister,Pal Varisai, before Draupadi. Moved by his unwavering faith, Draupadi stopped the sacrifice before it could take place. Instead, she blessed him with a divine boon:

She then invited him to leave his former life and dedicate himself completely to her service. From that day onward, Sri Muthal Ravuthar became one of her most faithful guardians.

A well-known tradition preserved at the Draupadi Amman Temple inChinna Salem tells another story.

சின்னசேலம் திரௌபதி அம்மன் கோவில் மரபில் கூறப்படும் மற்றொரு கதை குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

A king named Muthala Maharaja ruled the northern kingdom of Muthalappuram. Having no son, he married his daughter Muthalakkanni to Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira).

முத்தால மகாராஜா என்ற மன்னர் வடதிசையில் முத்தாலபுரம் என்ற நாட்டை ஆண்டதாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது. அவருக்கு ஆண் வாரிசு இல்லாததால், தனது மகள் முத்தாலக்கண்ணியை தர்மருக்கு (யுதிஷ்டிரர்) திருமணம் செய்து வைத்தார். திருமணத்திற்குப் பிறகு, தனது அரசாட்சியையும் செல்வங்களையும் தர்மரிடம் ஒப்படைத்தார்.

When the kingdom was entrusted to Dharmaraja, Sri Muthal Ravuthar was offered wealth and land as a reward for his loyal service. He respectfully declined, choosing instead to remain devoted to Muthalakkanni and continue serving the royal family.
