This page distinguishes documented research from oral tradition. At present there are no known inscriptions or archaeological records that directly establish the historical existence of Sri Muthal Ravuthar as an individual — most available information comes from folk traditions, Draupadi Amman temple practices, Therukoothu literature, and academic studies of Tamil folk religion.

Overview

Sri Muthal Ravuthar is a revered guardian deity in Tamil folk religion whose worship has been preserved primarily through oral tradition, temple rituals, folk theatre, and community heritage.

Academic studies identify him as one of the important guardian figures associated with the Draupadi Amman traditionof Tamil Nadu. Unlike many historical rulers or saints, his history survives mainly through living cultural traditions rather than inscriptions or royal chronicles.1

Historical Timeline

  1. Before the 10th Century CE

There is currently no direct literary or inscriptional evidence mentioning Sri Muthal Ravuthar during the Sangam, Pallava, or early Chola periods.

  2. 10th – 13th Century CE · Chola period

During the later Chola period, the worship of village guardian deities became increasingly integrated into Tamil temple culture.

Although Sri Muthal Ravuthar is not mentioned in known Chola inscriptions, scholars note that many guardian deities associated with Draupadi Amman traditions likely developed during or shortly after this period, alongside expanding Mahabharata-based village worship.1

  3. 13th – 16th Century CE · Late Medieval Tamil Nadu

The Draupadi Amman cult expanded across northern Tamil Nadu. Academic research suggests that Sri Muthal Ravuthar emerged during this period as one of the principal guardian figures protecting Draupadi Amman.

His appearance reflects the interaction between Tamil folk traditions, epic narratives, and the historical presence of Muslim cavalry traditions in South India.1

  4. 15th Century CE · Literary evidence of the term "Ravuthar"

Tamil literary tradition provides an important early reference to the use of the term "Ravuthan / Ravuthar" inKandar Alangaram, attributed to the renowned Tamil saint-poet Arunagirinathar, generally dated to the 15th century CE.

    Verse 37 — "…Sūr-kondra Rāvuthanē!"(the Ravuthar who destroyed Sūran)

Verse 50 — "…Iravuthanē, who rides the majestic peacock."

In the traditional commentary,"Ravuthan" is explained in connection with ahorseman or cavalry servant/warrior. These references demonstrate that the word was already part of the Tamil literary and cultural vocabulary by the 15th century CE.4

  5. 16th – 18th Century CE · Nayak period

Therukoothu (Tamil street theatre) became one of the primary media through which the legends of Sri Muthal Ravuthar were transmitted. He appears as:

    • Guardian of Draupadi
    • Warrior devoted to Dharma
    • Companion of Pottu Raja
    • Protector of temple entrances

Many of today's oral traditions originate from these dramatic performances.1

  6. 19th Century · Colonial ethnography19

British colonial ethnographers began documenting Tamil village religions. Early records mention Muttal Ravuttan as a guardian spirit worshipped by certain communities in the Tiruchirappalli region.

These records demonstrate that worship of the deity was already established by the nineteenth century, although different communities preserved different legends.1

The Researcher's Conclusion

On the historical evidence available today, information about Sri Muthal Ravuthar has been preserved chiefly through Tamil folk traditions, Draupadi Amman worship, Therukoothu, and the writings of religious scholars.

His history is therefore best understood as aliving cultural heritage — carried not in stone inscriptions but in worship, festivals, and oral traditions passed down through generations.1
